SEMA Show: Clear Wheels

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

D’Vinci Forgiato Wheels worked up these transparent rollers made of Lexan or something. The reps say they’re roadworthy, though we might have a problem with cleaning the brake dust off everytime we go out for groceries. Rolling fly is such a pain in the ass. [Gallery]

SEMA Show: Hyundai’s Bitchin’ Rides

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

hyundai_k_daddy.jpg

Hyundai’s continuing its tradition of spending beaucoup bucks shoring up its standing among the import tuner crowd here at SEMA. The company rolled out several tuner show cars based on its Azera (pictured), Tiburon, Entourage, Santa Fe, Elantra, and Sonata models. K Daddyz Kustomz turned the Azera into a drop-bodied urban roller with suicide doors, Accent into a reverse-doored street cruiser and Entourage into a soccer-mom-as-pimp wagon. Helmet painter Troy Lee mimicked his signature paint schemes on a Santa Fe (with scissor doors, natch), Street Customs made the Tiburon and Sonata into typical audio-centric streeters, and David Martin and BP Racing rendered the new Elantra as a race-ready clubsport toy. No word on the cred boost Hyundai received, but one onlooker was overheard describing the cars as “bitchin’.” For what that’s worth. [Gallery]

SUPER FORKLIFT CHASING POTENTIAL: Weld’s Model 40 Coupe at SEMA

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

The Center Hall is where the hot rod stuff likes to live. Once the lifeblood of the SEMA Show, it’s been overtaken in popularity by tuner action and increasingly-larger wheels. But Weld Racing, purveyors of go-fast wheels with what’s basically a stranglehold on the quarter-mile, showed up with this blown Ford Model 40 coupe. And then it scared small forklifts. Our chest hair is proud. [– Davey G. Johnson

SEMA Show: Holden Monaro-Spec Pontiac GTO

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

holden_gto_spec.jpg

Why be beholden to GM’s global badge-engineering tactics? Here’s one from the badge re-engineering department. Just as the JDM-spec kids take domestically sold Japanese cars and refit them in Japanese spec, JHP Vehicle Enhancements will recast a US-spec Pontiac GTO as an Australian-version Holden Monaro — the car the late model Goat was born to be. The end product not exactly Aussie spec, considering it’s still left-hand drive. But then again, there is such a thing as being too Australian (just ask a platypus.) [Gallery]

SEMA Show Exclusive: Jay Leno Loves The Amerigasm, And We Have The Napkin To Prove It!

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Above you’ll find our man Jay Leno, the lover of cars, and garage-lover of the Jalop riffing on the EcoJet. We learned the man can be pretty darn funny in person — but he also revealed his own secret love of the “amerigasm” as proven by his decision to only collect and build on ‘merican cars and trucks. In addition to that bombshell, one of the more interesting points from last night’s Leno event introducing his one-off biodiesel-burning supercar was when we learned the idea for the EcoJet originated with some of GM Design VP Ed Welburn napkin doodles. Well, since the General’s all about saving things for posterity — they even managed to save the napkin he doodled his ideas for this unveiled-at-SEMA supercar-to-be — or at least the cockpit of said vehicle. We’ve got that picture below the jump, and a full gallery of the CAD and design team work-ups of the project. As an added bonus we’ve also got some great shots of Leno in denim-on-denim, and yeah, it’s hawt.

SEMA Show: Damn Those Yankees And Their OC Chopper

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

DSC03370.jpgWell, I know that choppers are totally not my bag, but when I saw this little OC Chopper-created cycle for purposes of auctioning off to charity at the General’s Silverado silliness last night, I knew I had to show it off — if only because my beloved Detroit Tigers gave them an impressive smack-down during the American League Divisional Series. Full gallery below.

SEMA Show: Caresto Volvo V8 Speedster

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

volvo_v8_speedster_1.jpg

At SEMA in 2004 Volvo showed off the T6, a rod-like concept that turned the old boxy Volvo paradigm on its formerly flat head. This year, they’ve brought along the Caresto V8 Speedster, a mid-engined roadster concept powered by ethanol-capable Volvo V8. It’s built of aluminum and carbon fiber, and rides on a sports car chassis. We’ll take one in teal, with Coddington’s head on a platter of herring.

SEMA Show: Morning Muscle

There’s so much eye candy outside the Las Vegas Convention center, they should have an ophthalmologist on hand for eyeache victims. We took a quick walk around and stumbled on a few gems, including this Dick Landy pro-stock Dodge Challenger and this custom Citroen. We’re going to find a sandwich.
